Tragedy to Triumph

This is the story of Mary. Mary is 56 years old, an African American woman and she has been a part of Abby's House since the 90s. Mary is developmentally challenged and suffers from Anxiety Disorder. She grew up with her parents, her aunt and later with her cousin after her parents passed away. Her cousin and cousin's boyfriend were physically and emotionally abusive, restricting her access to food until late in the day by putting a chain in the refrigerator and stealing her money.

A Turning Point

On August 30, 1998, Mary decided to leave her cousin's house after she was abused with a belt. The police brought her to the PIP shelter and she was given access to the HOAP clinic. Mary was then referred to Abby's House Shelter for safety reasons. A few months later, Mary was accepted at Oasis House. In June of 1999, she moved to Abby's long-term housing and started a program at Gate Way in order to keep her safe and active during the day. She was able to obtain a case manager at the Lutheran Social Services to learn basic skills such as taking the bus, preparing her own meals, and living more independently in general.

Moving on

Since October of 2003, Mary has lived at the Emmanuel House, which is run by Lutheran Social Services. She maintains her relationship with Abby's House, visiting us for lunch at the Women's Center and shopping at our Thrift store.

Mary is an amazing example of the human spirit, maintaining hope, kindness, and strength in the face of adversity.
